Dana Point History: The Richard Henry Dana Era

1835  New Englander Richard Henry Dana visited this area now named for him as an ordinary seaman aboard Pilgrim, then Alert: hide trading ships that traveled here around Cape Horn.

1840  Dana returned to Boston and published Two Years Before the Mast about his California voyage, in which he described this local beach and bluff area as "the only romantic spot in California."

1884   United States Coast Survey named the Headlands "Dana Point" for the author, the name which came to include the surrounding community.
