New Year Greetings!  2015 ended on high note with the dedication of the Richard Henry Dana Jr. Bicentennial Plaque.  We had a beautiful day to conclude our Year of Dana celebration with the presentation of the plaque on Sunday, December 6 (pictured below).  A crowd of members and guests circled the R.H. Dana Jr. harbor statue as Orange County Supervisor Lisa spoke, then read aloud the plaque’s inscription as it was unveiled by two Dana...

This has been a banner year for the Historical Society and I am thankful for everything our members, volunteers and donors have accomplished. The results of our Fifteenth Annual Home Tour exceeded our expectations, despite the heat on Sunday, October 11. Over five hundred people participated and, with less-than-projected expenses, we have cleared more than $18,000 toward our mission to preserve and share local history with residents and...

Our August 1, 2015, Dana Birthday Celebration was indeed a “once in a lifetime” salute to our namesake, held in collaboration with the Ocean Institute and with the efforts of those who organized, presented and donated to create  a unique event.  My sincere thanks to Elizabeth Bamattre for directing a well-organized program, and to Tracy Kirby, Ocean Institute, for organizing the venues (please view page 5).  The Toshiba Tall Ships...

It is with heartfelt sadness and admiration for a life well lived that I begin this message.  Our friend Mel Pierce passed away on May 19.  To me, Mel has always been our patriarch as a longtime resident, who, together with his wife Helen, was officially named a Historical Society founder in 2007, and was a mentor to those of us interested in Sidney H. Woodruff’s early develoment of Dana Point.  It was just May 13th when the Historical...

Based on all reports received, our March efforts to take Dana Point history to the public were a success, thanks to our dedicated volunteers. Visitors from Texas (including a distant relation to both S.H Woodruff AND the wife of Richard Henry Dana, Jr.) wrote:  “We appreciate the time that you gave up on your weekend so that you could give us a 90 minute walking tour of Dana Point on March 14, during the last weekend of the Festival of...

Our February program will continue our celebration of Richard Henry Dana Jr.’s bicentennial year with a presentation about the brig Pilgrim, the tall ship that brought our namesake, Dana, to Capistrano Bay in 1835.  Our captain on this journey is Randle M. Biddle, a published author in maritime history from Valencia, California, who builds and repairs model ships.  He will share his extensive research to reconstruct the actual appearance of...
