1928, Woodruff

Mills Act: Yes

Featured on the Dana Point Historical Society’s 2006 Home Tour, “A Step Back in Time”, the beautiful front garden shows how much the owners treasure the charm and character of their Woodruff home. This original 1928 Woodruff Historic Spanish Colonial Revival home is built in an irregular rectangle plan with the original low pitch, random set, red clay barrel tile, stepped gable roof visible from the street. An early Woodruff promotion photo shows the façade looking much as it does today with wood casement windows, one with its decorative wrought iron grille and another with a wood scallop patterned privacy screen. The side facing arched entrance features a heavy wood front door with a redwood exterior and its original hardware is intact. The interior entry hall has a coat closet with a window for ventilation and the living room features a 12 ft. ceiling with the original beams and corbels that give the room a warmth and spaciousness highlighted by the original quarter-sawn oak floors. The fireplace has the original hearth and a unique forged iron band-with-hooks to hang fire tongs and cooking utensils, as part of the rustic Spanish Colonial revival style. This house was one of ten homes contracted with Lincoln Mortgage by the developer, S. H. Woodruff. Documents in the Woodruff collection state that the home, erected on Lot #24 of Tract 723, was one of two built on Chula Vista Avenue for the realtor and investor, Mrs. Anna G. Walters. The home received The Lantern Village Association’s 2002 Historic Heritage Award.
