This historic home has been in the Carter family since 1960 and was a witness to the early Doheny history of Capistrano Beach. The home was previously owned by well known local artist Louise Leyden who entrusted the Carters with the building plans and blueprints of this and other Doheny homes. Louise had stored the plans over 30 years after her father-in-law, Harrison Leyden, and husband, Don Leyden, were hired by Edward Doheny Sr. to take charge of the Doheny development a few months after Ned Doheny’s untimely death in February, 1929. The home was built by and for Luther Eldridge who was employed by Ned Doheny Jr. as his contractor. The home’s building plans are signed by Roy C. Kelley, the staff architect hired by Ned Doheny, who designed a home for the Doheny family on the palisades and 22 other homes in the Doheny development. This one story Spanish colonial Revival house is built in a rectangular plan as a series of attached, gable roof units, grouped around a central courtyard. It has the appearance of a rustic adobe with plaster walls, timber lintels over wood casement windows, low pitch roofs and exterior exposed rafter tails. An under roof veranda is across the front of the home, serving as an exterior entry and the original “Model A” garage is now enclosed as a room. A side patio is behind a tile-capped wall on the left side of the home. The home was featured on the 2009 Historic Society Home tour and guests were amazed by the wood ceilings throughout, one trussed, some hand stenciled and all original. Other original features include the fireplace, hardwood flooring, wall niches and wall sconces. The home has approximately 1930 square feet with an additional 499 sq. ft. basement for a laundry room and storage and is currently on the real estate market.
