1929, Doheny

Mills Act: Yes

This charming Doheny home was featured on the 2006 Historical Society Home tour when owned by world class tandem surfers Gary and Johanna Siskar. The Siskars moved and the current owners agreed to show their restoration-in-progress as part of the 2009 Home Tour celebrating the Endless Summer of Capistrano Beach and Doheny State Beach. The Spanish Colonial Revival home is built in an “L” plan and has a two-story section at the inside corner with a low pitch hip roof. The other one story wings of the “L” are gables except for the small shed roof over the entry porch. All of the roofs have red clay tile and exposed rafter tails. The trowelled stucco walls are accented by wood casement windows and tile vents in the gables. The front gable wall was extended when the home was used as an art gallery and the upstairs suite was the artist’s studio. The current owners are Historical Society members and have carefully restored the fireplace from a previously massive stone cover-up. The fireplace has been rebuilt to its original hearth dimensions, replastered and decorated with hand painted tiles from Mexico. Custom wood French doors now replace earlier vinyl replacement doors. The beautiful wood trussed ceiling remains and the original oak floors have been restored. Hand wrought iron light fixtures replace the missing originals and the original kitchen cabinets also remain in the home. There is also a separate guest casita and office. The large lot has a generous back yard and extra street parking.
