On Saturday, January 3, 2009, the Dana Point Historical Society, with support from OC Dana Point Harbor, City of Dana Point , the Ocean Institute, CR&R and hundreds of locals, celebrated the historic swearing in of the original city council. The event began at 2:00 pm aboard the brig Pilgrim in Dana Point Harbor, opened with the wonderful music of the Fanfare Trumpeters and Drumline from SOCSA - South Orange County School of the Arts - from Dana Hills High School and the National Anthem sung by Dana Hills High School SOCSA Mixed Vocal Jazz Ensemble. All residents of Dana Point were invited and hundreds attended. Souvenir twenty-year history booklets and the Dana Point 2009 historical calendar were given away to all who attended commemorating the event.
The one hour program was hosted and opened by Dana Point Historical Society's president, Carlos Olvera, and featured these guest speakers:
The Historical Society had a series of story boards displaying newspaper articles of the city's incorporation and the initial candidates race for city council as well as the Dana Point Historical Society's DVD presentation of Dana Point, My Home Town. These DVDs are available for purchase for just $25 by contacting the Dana Point Historical Society. Included was a display of Twenty Years of Leadership featuring the city council members of the past twenty years. Light refreshments and food was be served at the conclusion of the event.
